Faraway: Get Out of Your World
In the Land of Genghis Khan
The World Nomad Games began two years ago as a way to celebrate the nomadic culture of Central Asia. The games certainly testify to the fact that this culture is by no means withering away. 70,000 people attended this years’ festival which began on September 3 and ran till the 8th.
I heard the story on PRI which you can listen to here. The games feature ancient sports like falcon hunting and horseback archery as well as other cultural events like yurt building. Children participate in the games as well, making it a family affair all the way around.
The Guardian has the best photos of the event, which after looking through them, you might just put this on your bucket list of places to go and people to meet! My favorite is the total joy expressed on a young girl’s face as she performs stunt-riding in the opening ceremony in a beautifully beaded royal red costume, pictured above.
