Environment: Making it better wherever you are
Fresh Air and Sunshine
What’s better than the smell of fresh laundry off a clothesline? When I was a small child, my mother hung out the wash. The scent of sunshine stayed on our clothes long after they left the line.
I came across an article by Ruth Gordon in The Guardian, “Why you should ditch the tumble dryer and use your washing line.” Gordon discusses the benefits of hanging laundry outside to dry and gives a little history of laundry drying techniques from draping clothes over a bush to using a clothesline. The advantages of sunlight as a natural bleaching and antibacterial agent give good reasons to use your dryer less, not to mention the energy saving factor. And I’d like to add one more thing to Gordon’s case for hanging laundry outside: being out in the fresh air, hearing the sounds of your environment, and perhaps even striking up a conversation with a neighbor - all this can enhance your personal well-being. Think of hanging out your laundry as a time to renew your spirit.
