Children: Let Them Amaze You
Young Boy Brokers Peace with Lions
Ever since Richard Turere could walk, he’s been out on the grasslands of the Kenya savanna helping to watch over his father’s cattle. Every now and then a lion would pick one off. Richard wanted to come up with an idea to keep the lions away. Fire didn’t work, neither did scarecrows. Then Richard discovered that lions are afraid of moving lights. He rigged up a system of flashing lights around the boma (African word for livestock enclosure). It worked!
Richard has since become an international celebrity of sorts, having spoken at T.E.D. 2013 and is now partnering with Lion Guardians and The Kenya Wildlife Trust to improve his invention by using solar energy instead of batteries. You can read more of Richard’s story from his T.E.D. introduction. You can watch his presentation on TED.com.
