SCENE I. San Francisco Airport. 1969. Helicopter Pad.
Riley walking up steps to helicopter... Fight Attendant waiting...
FLIGHT ATTENDANT (smiles)
Welcome! Sit wherever you’d like.
SCENE II. Inside helicopter
Riley heads for the last row... to the only seat available... between two girls -- FIRST GIRL has long brown scraggly hair, parted down the middle, dark eyes, thick black eyeliner, bushy eyebrows... dressed all in black: leather jacket, jeans, Hell’s Angels t-shirt, motorcycle boots... heavy ornate silver rings on every finger... SECOND GIRL has wispy blonde hair hanging beneath a wide-brimmed straw hat with bright pink pom-poms dangling all around brim, pale freckled skin, light blue eyes... wearing a sheer apricot gauze dress, no bra... white espadrilles on her feet, red-striped toenails... a rubber chicken dangles from wristband...
Hi, I’m Riley.
Teresa glances up and down suspiciously at Riley, whose shoulder-length red hair curves under in a perfect pageboy, tiny gold studs in each ear... a white blouse with a neatly pressed Peter Pan collar lays over a navy blue v-neck sweater... forest green plaid kilt with large brass pin. Teresa stares at Riley’s navy blue knee socks in polished penny loafers with shiny new pennies in each one... then looks up
You gonna sit down?
Where are you from?
A small town in Ohio. Where are you from?
(who’s been staring out the window the whole time)
Where are you guys headed anyway?
I’m going to the art school in Berkeley.
Far out! So am I!
Then we can share a cab...
SCENE III. Art school campus
Cab driver pulls up to dormitory entrance. Teresa and Angie get out first and disappear. Riley sits in cab fidgeting in her purse, getting money out for fare... Riley gets out... driver lifting her matching leather luggage from trunk...
Hey, where did they go?
You talkin’ about those two girls?
Yeah, those two. They said they’d split the fare with me.
Listen, sweetheart, you just got stiffed. Welcome to California.
